The Supreme Court on Tuesday today, slammed the age old tradition of barbaric Jallikattu and asked if child marriage can be banned which was also an age old practice then why not Jallikattu.

The court’s strong response has come following Tamil Nadu’s argument that Jallikattu should be permitted as it showcases a cultural tradition that has been part of the custom and culture of people of the state for 5000 years. In January this year, the Supreme Court had stayed the Centre’s decision to allow holding of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu during Pongal festival that month.
