“These are military operations to annihilate the Balochi people. Today it is Dera Bukti, tomorrow somewhere else. Unspeakable violence and deaths, massacres of our women, children and men, aerial bombardments, bombs, shooting, killings – Balochistan is a war zone”. These were the words of Baloch leader Nawab Brahumdagh Bugti in an interview to a popular English daily. The issue of Baloch has been creating storm ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Independence Day speech from the ramparts of Red Fort had mentioned the atrocities committed on the people of that region by Pakistani forces. The gesture has been highly appreciated by the people of Balochistan. Narendra Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister who has spoken for some six million Balochis represented by or affiliated to the BRP, it was the voice of a concerned neighbour, a human being, the Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy and a global statesman. On the other hand, Pakistan is finding it very hard to eschew this gesture and has sharply retaliated. Not just locals in Baloch but even Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has applauded Modi. Several Baloch leaders have been vocal on Twitter in praise for Indian Prime Minister.
