WhatsApp has made a 180 degree turn in its company policies and have decided to hand over user information to parent company Facebook. Earlier, when it was acquired by facebook, the company had assured that WhatsApp user data will remain private telling users that “Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible”. The new changes will allow facebook to see the phone number that people use with their WhatsApp account. That gives them a way of tracking people that is shared across the two sites, helping Facebook gather data for ads. Refuting the apprehension that this will create embarrassment for users, the company has said that change has been made to help make the experience better for its users. However, the news has already created panic among users as they feel it is a breach of privacy as the private information and messages are going to be used for ads, which is Facebook’s primary business.
