Complying with Supreme Court’s directive, Karnataka has started to release Cauvery water to the neighbouring state, Tamil Nadu and will continue to do so for next ten days. The court had directed to release 15,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu which led to an immediate backlash with agitated farmers and activists belonging to pro-Kannada outfits. The violence has further intensified as protestors in Mandya and other parts of the state have blocked several roads forcing schools and colleges to shut down. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the state would approach the Supreme Court with a modification petition explaining its difficulties in implementing the court order of directing release of 15,000 cusecs per day to Tamil Nadu for next ten days.
