In a historic moment, India has managed to win two medals in Paralympics Games, with Mariyappan Thangavelu winning the gold while his compatriot Varun Singh Bhati bagging the bronze in the men’s high jump T-42 event on Saturday.
Thangavelu made a leap of 1.89m, while Varun jumped his personal best of 1.86 metres to finish third. Sam Grewe of USA won the silver medal. T-42 category includes athletes with single ‘above the knee amputations or a comparable disability.
This is India’s third gold medal in Paralympics Games, Murlikant Petkar won in swimming at Heidelberg 1972 and Devedra Jhajharia at Athens 2004 in Javelin Throw.
