The festival of Navratri begins with traditional gaiety and fervour. The festival depicts the victory of Goddess Durga or shakti over evil. The word Navaratri means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshipped. The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or “Dussehra” (also spelled Dasera). On the first day, Goddess Shailputri is worshiped followed by Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauriand Siddhidatri during the nine days. Since morning devotees have been visiting various temples to offer special prayers. Shops selling puja items have come up along roadside selling various essential things used during the Navaratri. Staging of Ram Leela depicting life and stories fro epic Ramayana also starts from this day.
