The Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s 50 year-long civil war to an end.

The award came just days after Colombian voters narrowly rejected the peace deal that Santos helped bring about.

Santos joins a list of 129 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates including the US President Theodore Roosevelt; Martin Luther King Jr; South African President Nelson Mandela and Yemeni activist Tawakkul Karman.

The prize was first awarded in 1901.
