Jia Jia believed to have been the oldest Panda ever kept in captivity has died at the age of 38. The female panda whose name meant ‘good’ was around 11-years-old in human terms. She moved to Hong Kong in 1999 where she lived ever since. But in recent weeks, her health had declined rapidly, causing a loss of appetite and weight. On Sunday, Jia Jia’s owners’ Ocean Park announced that she had been put down.
The average life expectancy for pandas living in captivity is under 20 years, making Jia Jia’s longevity unique among her species.
