Thailand has entered a one-year mourning period to mark the death of the beloved king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, who had passed away at the age of 88 on Thursday. The kings has been world’s longest reigning monarch. Minutes after the news broke Thailand’s junta chief had ordered that “all entertainment functions must tone down for 30 days as a mark of respect. This is having an impact on tourism too as tourists globally are also being reminded not to talk in a way that may be considered critical of the Thai royal family. Even Bangkok’s red light districts have already started shutting up shop affecting. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has warned Australian travellers to show respect and understand that it’s time of sorrow for people in Thailand. Australian diplomatic missions in Thailand may be closed during the mourning period. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, may become the new king.
