Last week when president-elect Donald Trump made direct contact with Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen, breaking a policy that was signed back in 1979 sparked alarm as the US does not have formal relations with Taiwan. The single phone call made China lodge a diplomatic complaint.
Now the White House officials said that they have assured China of their continued commitment to a one-China policy. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it was “hard to determine exactly what the aim was” behind the president-elect’s actions.
Trump’s phone call was followed by two tweets in which he criticised China’s monetary policy and its operations in the South China Sea. However, Trump downplayed his conversation with Tsai, calling it a courtesy call.
