After the government’s announcement that service charge would no longer be mandatory, National Restaurant Association of India has issued a statement implying that customers would be free not to eat at a restaurant if they did not wish to pay the service charge levied by it.
NRAI has cited judicial precedent to support its case for the levying of a service charge and said levying service charge was a common and accepted practice that has been recognised as such by various government departments.
Earlier, the union ministry of consumer affairs had issued a statement asking states to ensure that hotels and restaurants displayed information that service charge had been optional on their premises.
